2 years old and rolled in poo twice today

My boy Dublin rolled in poo twice today!! He has NEVER done this before and I find it to be disgusting (obviously), and very odd behavior. We are visiting my boyfriend's sister in the mountains of Colorado, we have been here for over a week and today was the first time he did this. My boyfriend swears that it is not dog poo. I saw him do it once and assumed he had fallen in it and was trying to rub it off. We hosed him off and washed his collar and thought it was over. An hour later I put his collar back on and he immediately ran to the back of the house and rolled in the poo AGAIN!! We hosed him off again and had to use some soap to get the smell off (I can still smell it if I get close), rewashed his collar, and covered the poo up with tons of dirt. Should I be worried that he well now be doing this on a regular basis now? It is really gross and he is such a cuddler, it breaks my heart to push him away right now. Any advice? Or even a reason for why he has suddenly started doing this?

They do that, you have to keep an eye on him. How's his recall? If you say "leave it", does he?

Usually if I tell him to "leave it" he will obey. The problem is I am not always there, He runs free around the property. So far today he has been running around and hasn't done it again. Though we still haven't put his collar back on him, and last time he was fine for an hour running around till I put his collar on, then he ran straight for the poo. I am not sure if there was something special about that particular poo, we covered it up pretty well so I don't think he will go for it again. I guess I am wondering why he did it, he has never done this before. I also wonder if this is something I am going to have to watch out for in the future. Will he only want to do that with other animal poo or will he start to do that with his dog sister's poo too. This is all new to me...

That's good that he will leave it, some dogs love to roll in other animals poop, probably not another dog, but other animals. I've read of some dogs loving to roll in rabbit, deer, whatever poop, also, dead animals. You're gonna have to keep an eye on him. Hopefully others with more knowledge will chime in and can give you better info.

Yeah dogs love to roll in the stinky stuff...Moose loves cow and horse especially....and dead things. Luckly, he's a lab who also loves water, including the hose and showers....Generally, I keep a close eye on him when their might be something stinky around, sometimes he gets to it anyways. Have you watched him roll, I call it the kick'n chicken...He has such a huge smile... Like previous posters said tell him to leave it.

While this is a gross and stinky topic it is nice to know that I don't suffer alone! My 11 year old Jack Russell likes to roll in slugs or worms...not sure exactly what it is....but he STINKS after and has brown streaks on his white fur. (I also watched him roll in racoon poop at the cottage, YUCK!) So once the Jack is done with his roll in the grass our Stella takes her turn. Luckily she is brown and the streaks don't show and she gets "washed" by swimming. I try to tell them to stop when they are in mid-roll: the Jack has selective hearing but Stella usually stops. The things we dog lovers put up with!! ;)
