There's not much difference between types of labs. Any perceived difference is probably due to individual differences. All labs make great family pets. You are better off looking for the right temperament in the puppy and learning about training than trying to differentiate between chocolate, golden or black labs.

Thank you everybody for your input. I asked my SIL where she got such info- and of course should could not remember _but it must be true she says.
I will continue to do my research, as I am excited to add another member to our family, as well as a possible hunting partner. The most difficult thing I come across is trying to find a reputable breeder - and trying to decide what a good price from a reputable breeder should be. Why is there so much differentiation from breeders? What is the best way to find a reputable breeder? The local breed club? – I prefer one close to my house - Any suggestions?

I went to a reputable breeder for my last dog and ended up spending thousands of dollars in health issues. Needless to say I don’t need that problem, and I am somewhat sketchy of reputable breeders.

The first thing you need to do is educate yourself. Get some books on Labs only then find yourself a reputable breeder who knows what he is doing. Labs in general are not aggressive dogs at all. But I also believe it has a lot to do with the owner how your dog behaves is a reflection on how well you raise your dog. Labs are very people oriented they like to be with their owners at all times. We take Cash everywhere we go and he is awesome. But my husband and I spent a year looking into breeders reading books discussing how we would raise our dog before we even brougth him home then when we did we were on the same page and there was no question on how he should be raised. I guess raising your dog is kind of like raising a child everyone needs to be on the same page and be as knowledgeable as possible. Good luck..

I have a friend that has a chocolate male that is aggressive towards other dogs but not people. Mine are big, laid back couch potatoes...even my 19 month old is a laid back boy and he is unaltered. He will fall asleep at our training club when we are doing the long down. It depends on the dog not the color...

WOW!!!! That couldn't be farther from the truth. My 7 year old chocolate lab, Finigan, is so laid back it's not funny. If some other dog steals his ball at the dog park he just follows them around and patiently waits until they drop it. If it is taking too long he will come over to me and tattle on them to see if I will get it back for him.
This weekend we had some thunderstorms, which he doesn't like. He was lying on the floor by my feet and let my 7 month old granddaughter come over and hug him so he would be safe. An aggressive dog would've felt threatened and snapped at her.
On a side note....took until 1 am for him to go out for a pee...storms stopped about 6 hours earlier....lol
Every chocoloate lab I've met is a big baby!! Which is why we all love them so much!!

Hardly true at all. I have 5 chocolates, and they are sweet and very trainable. Even my 16 week old pups are walking on leash, behave and trustworthy off leash as well.

That's like saying that a certain race of human are more aggressive or stupid. Labs are labs. regardless of color. all the same.

So not true. Educating ourselves is very important. As Lukesmom said, find a reputable breeder and you will not regret getting a chocolate. I have 14 right now...all indoors. They are 5, 3, 2-1/2, 12 months, 4 months and 9-3 week old puppies. All chocolates....

All I can say my Chocolate Lab is not aggressive. I take him to the town dog park and every now and then there will a dog that will be a bit aggressive my Lab just looks at them and jump over or round them.
When Zale was about 2 years old a Dachshund from next door grabbed his upper lip Zale just walk over to me with this dog hanging. It drop off, all Zale did was to jump around the Dachshund until it went home.

My UPS man and the Gas meter reader man do not trust Black or Yellow Labs but trust Chocolate Lab.Thats a Quote
